The Creator, The Subject, The Catalyst, or The Observer. Which are you?

Which One Are You?

Most people donโ€™t think about this. They show up. They move through life. They take photos when they need them. They scroll past everything else. They never stop to ask what role theyโ€™re actually playing. But if you pay attentionโ€”really pay attentionโ€”you start to see it. There are only a few types of people in any creative space. And youโ€™re one of them.

The Creator

This is the one behind the lens. Or the one building something out of nothing. They donโ€™t wait for permission. They donโ€™t wait to feel ready. They take an ideaโ€”half-formed, imperfectโ€”and force it into reality. Creators shape things. They control light, direction, structure. They decide what matters and what doesnโ€™t. Without them, nothing gets made.

The Subject

This is where most people get it wrong. They think being in front of the camera is passive. That itโ€™s about standing there and being told what to do. Itโ€™s not. The subject is the medium. Your body, your posture, your tension, your confidenceโ€”or your lack of itโ€”thatโ€™s the material. Thatโ€™s what the work is built from. A strong subject doesnโ€™t just show up.

They become part of the idea.

The Catalyst

This is the rare one. The catalyst doesnโ€™t just participateโ€”they change the direction of everything. They walk into a space and suddenly the work is different. Sharper. More dangerous. More real. They donโ€™t need to say much. Sometimes they donโ€™t say anything at all. But they pull something out of the creator that wasnโ€™t there before. You donโ€™t plan for a catalyst. You recognize them when it happens.

The Observer

This is where most people live. Watching. Scrolling. Thinking about it. Almost stepping forwardโ€”but not quite. Observers convince themselves theyโ€™re โ€œnot ready.โ€ Not creative. Not the type of person who does something like this. So they stay where itโ€™s safe. They watch other people create something realโ€ฆ and call it interesting. Then move on.

Hereโ€™s the Part That Matters

None of these roles are permanent. You can move between them. Most observers donโ€™t. Most people stay Observers because itโ€™s easier than risking something. Because stepping in front of the camera means being seen. Because participating means letting go of control. Because creating something real means you canโ€™t hide behind excuses anymore.

So Which One Are You?

Be honest. Are you shaping something? Are you part of it? Do you change it? Or are you just watching it happen?

What I Do

BadBoy Photography isnโ€™t built for observers. Itโ€™s an experimental collaboration with people who are willing to step into something realโ€”whether that means creating it, becoming part of it, or pushing it somewhere unexpected. If that makes you uncomfortable, youโ€™re probably not ready. If it makes you curiousโ€ฆthen you already know where this is going.
